Its about two years since I became aware of Low Carb High fat as a way of eating ( LCHF). A work colleague of mine (The Fat Emperor) did a 1.5 hour talk on sugar and the detrimental impact it has on the health of all humans, be they overweight or not. I was intrigued, I couldn’t believe that a high fat diet would result in optimum weight and actually improved blood markers and heart health. I had, for most of my life followed a low fat diet and exercised vigorously (including marathon running) 4 or 5 times per week, but often found myself fighting hunger and cravings for certain food. I was approx 20 pounds overweight as well.
Being an engineer I am a believer in the data never lies, and following up on many further studies and research in this field, the data was certainly speaking for itself. There is overwhelming evidence now of the damaging effects of sugar and processed food, the following is an excellent article from the UK cardiologist Aseem Malhotra on the topic.
We have been duped into believing that the low fat diet is the way humans should eat for optimum health. This is blatantly incorrect. A low fat diet means a high carbohydrate diet. In the simplest of terms, carbohydrates cause a spike in insulin which drives appetite and promotes fat storage. An LCHF diet on the other hand results in better insulin control, appetite control and better overall health in every respect.
So two years ago I stopped eating sugars, processed foods and switched to natural fats including eggs, butter, cheese etc, I was naturally worried that my cholesterol and heart health would suffer, but that has not been the case. My blood tests for all cholestrols, triglycerides and fasting bloods sugars had improved significantly 1 and 2 years into this way of eating. My weight has dropped 20 pounds and my appetite is completely within my control.
While I am not a doctor or a nutritionist, I have spent a lot of time disecting the information that’s out there and I know the impact it has had on me and my families health. I have become accustomed to this way of cooking and eating, as have my husband,6 year old and 3 year old. And the food is yum yum! No more cravings and especially no more horrible low fat yoghurts, happy days. There’s no looking back now.
I will be sharing the typical food that we eat on a daily basis for those who might be interested in this lifestyle.
